The art of Khand basket weaving

Khand basket weaving begins with the harvest of local reed and cane, selected for flexibility and strength. Strips are soaked, split, and dried to a precise moisture, then woven by hand using a rhythm learned over years. Weavers start with a simple base, spiraling outward and tightening with each pass until form and tension match. Imperfections—slight variations in pattern, uneven color—are proof of handcraft, not defects. Finished baskets are cured, sometimes smoked, and bound with a wooden rim for longevity. Used daily, they mellow and acquire patina; each basket becomes a record of craft, place, and patient making and memory.
